Getting married on the French Riviera: everything you need to know
Peter & Catarina · · 8 min read
The French Riviera is one of those places that needs no embellishment. The light is golden almost year-round, the sea shifts colour with every passing hour, and the hilltop villages perched above the Mediterranean seem purpose-built for love stories. If you are dreaming of a wedding that blends elegance, warmth and breathtaking scenery, you have come to the right place. Here is everything you need to know to plan your wedding on the French Riviera, from the first venue visit to the last firework over the bay.
Why choose the French Riviera for your wedding?
Beyond the clichés — and they are well-earned — the French Riviera offers a diversity of settings that few regions in Europe can match. Within a handful of kilometres you move from the sophistication of Cannes to the medieval lanes of Èze, from Nice's pebbled beaches to the vineyards of the Var hinterland. That richness is exactly what draws the couples who reach out to us, whether they are based in Paris, London or New York.
Light, accessibility and prestige: the French Riviera ticks every box for a successful destination wedding. Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is one of the busiest in France, which makes logistics considerably simpler for international guests. Add to that one of Europe's most experienced wedding supplier networks, and it becomes clear why the region hosts hundreds of weddings every year.
The best places to get married on the French Riviera
Every corner of the Riviera has its own personality. Here are the areas that come up most often in our conversations with couples:
- Nice and its surroundings: perfect for a chic, urban wedding, with Belle Époque hôtels particuliers and an iconic seafront promenade as a backdrop.
- Cannes and the Lérins Islands: unashamedly glamorous, palace hotels, and the option of celebrating on a private island just off the coast.
- Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the hinterland: stone villages, ancient olive groves, art and authenticity at every turn.
- Èze and the Corniche: for vertiginous views over the Mediterranean, with Monaco glittering on the horizon at sunset.
- The Var and its wine estates: for a Provençal wedding among the vines, with a chilled local rosé to seal the deal.
As a wedding videographer and photographer on the French Riviera, we have filmed and photographed ceremonies in every one of these settings. Each venue has its own light, its own rhythm, its own quirks — and that is precisely what makes every film we create feel unique.
Which season should you choose for a Riviera wedding?
Peak season runs from May to October, with the busiest months being July and August. The truth, though, is that every season has something to offer.
- May and June: lush vegetation, comfortable temperatures (25–28°C), suppliers still available and prices more accessible. Our personal favourite months to film.
- July and August: sunshine guaranteed, full summer atmosphere, but intense heat (sometimes 35°C and above), large crowds and peak pricing. Plan an early evening ceremony to catch that warm golden light.
- September and October: September light on the Riviera may be the most beautiful of the year. Temperatures stay mild, tourists thin out and venues tend to have more availability.
- November to April: for couples who love off-season intimacy. Rain is a real possibility, but the winter landscapes carry a quiet, romantic beauty all of their own.
Finding your ideal wedding venue
The French Riviera is home to an extraordinary range of wedding venues: Provençal bastides, Belle Époque villas, wine estates, prestigious hotels with sea views, hilltop chapels… The choice can quickly feel overwhelming. A few criteria worth keeping in mind when you visit:
- Indoor and outdoor capacity, and whether on-site accommodation is available for your guests.
- Noise restrictions and closing times — some municipalities require music to stop at midnight or even earlier.
- Exclusivity: will another event be sharing the venue on your day?
- Supplier logistics: catering kitchen, delivery access, parking.
- Natural light and photo spaces. As photographers and videographers, this is always the first thing we look at.
Also check booking lead times: the most sought-after venues on the French Riviera are often reserved 18 to 24 months in advance for peak-season dates. Early action is always worth it.
Administrative formalities for international couples
If you are travelling from abroad to marry in France, a few administrative steps need to be planned ahead. A civil marriage in France requires a degree of domiciliation or temporary residence in the chosen municipality to carry full legal weight.
For non-resident couples, many choose a symbolic ceremony in France and formalise their union legally in their home country. This is in fact the most common approach among the international couples we work with. It gives complete freedom over the venue, the officiant, the language and the flow of the ceremony.
Required documents vary by nationality. The French embassy in your country or the town hall (mairie) of your chosen venue will be able to guide you precisely. Start these processes at least six months before your date.
Suppliers, budgets and organisation
A French Riviera wedding typically comes with a higher budget than elsewhere in France — venue fees, catering and accommodation reflect the region's premium positioning. A realistic range is €15,000 to €60,000 (and sometimes more), depending on the size of the wedding, the venue and the level of service you are looking for.
A few ways to make the most of your budget without compromising on quality:
- Opt for a shoulder-season date (May, June or September) to negotiate better rates.
- Work with a local wedding planner who knows the trusted suppliers, the pitfalls to avoid and can often secure better terms.
- Book early, especially for photography and videography — the best professionals are often fully booked for peak season by the spring of the previous year.

Wedding photography and videography on the Riviera: working with the light
The French Riviera is an exceptional playground for wedding photography and film. Mediterranean light is bold, warm and generous — but it can also be harsh in high summer between noon and 4pm. Here is how to make the most of it:
- Plan any outdoor ceremony for late afternoon (5–6pm in summer) to benefit from softer, more cinematic raking light.
- Build in a sunset couple session during golden hour, even a short one — twenty minutes is all it takes for images with the Mediterranean as a backdrop that you will treasure for ever.
- If your ceremony takes place inside a bastide or chapel, check the window orientation with your photographer to anticipate natural light conditions.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a wedding on the French Riviera cost on average?
The average budget for a French Riviera wedding falls between €15,000 and €60,000, depending on the size and level of service. Prestigious venues, high-end catering and guest accommodation are usually the biggest line items. Hiring a local wedding planner often helps optimise spending without sacrificing quality.
What is the best time of year to get married on the French Riviera?
May, June and September are the most popular months for their exceptional light, comfortable temperatures and lower tourist footfall. July and August guarantee sunshine but come with higher prices and intense heat. For the most cinematic images, September remains our top recommendation.
Can a foreign couple legally marry on the French Riviera?
Yes, although a civil marriage in France involves specific administrative requirements depending on your nationality. Many international couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in France — which offers far greater flexibility — and legalise their union in their home country. Contact the town hall of your chosen venue at least six months in advance to find out exactly which documents are required.
How do I find a wedding photographer and videographer on the French Riviera?
Start by reviewing portfolios online to make sure the style matches your vision. The best photo and video professionals book up 12 to 18 months in advance for peak-season dates. At Les Gars Sympas we cover the entire French Riviera and neighbouring regions — feel free to visit our FAQ page or get in touch directly.
Do I need a wedding planner for a French Riviera wedding?
It is not essential, but it is strongly recommended, especially for couples organising their wedding from abroad. A local planner knows the reliable suppliers, the administrative specificities of each municipality and the logistical pitfalls to avoid. For a destination wedding in particular, that investment tends to pay for itself in time saved, stress avoided and budget optimised.
